Poker is a card game in which the players try to form the best possible hand. There are a number of different variations to the game, but most share similar rules.<\/p>\n
In a standard version of poker, each player is dealt five cards face down. After the deal, each player may choose to draw additional cards. This process, called the draw, is usually followed by a betting interval.<\/p>\n
Each betting interval ends when the last player raises the pot or when all players check. The next betting interval starts with the player who made the last raise.<\/p>\n
Before the first hand, each player is required to ante up (pay a minimum amount of money into the pot). The ante may be in cash or chips.<\/p>\n
The amount of the ante is set prior to each hand and is usually determined by the type of poker being played. Ante values are generally lower for no-limit games, and higher for limit games.<\/p>\n
A player can also raise, in which case the original ante is added to the pot as part of the new bet. This is often done when a player believes that he has a stronger hand than the one held by the other players, or when a player wants to increase his bet size in order to get more of his opponents\u2019 chips.<\/p>\n
